The Town of Edisto Beach, according to its official website, is “one of the few remaining family-oriented, gently developed beaches on the eastern coastline of South Carolina. Located…where the Edisto River, one of the longest free-flowing, blackwater rivers in North America, completes its 206-mile journey to the Atlantic Ocean.” (Note: A blackwater river is a deep, slow-moving channel flowing through forested swamps or wetlands.) Nestled into both in Charleston and Colleton Counties, Edisto is about an hour’s drive southwest of the city of Charleston. Its year-round population has yet to reach 3000 people, but its visitor appeal continues to grow. Long comprised mostly of working plantations, since the 1900s the island has been reenergized as a tourist and resort destination although a small number of private plantations still remain.
