Much like neighboring McClellanville to the north on Rte. 17, Awendaw is a small fishing town. Its population of 1300 is growing in a manner town officials are trying to control. According to its official website, the town is striving to maintain its “existing rural character, yet grow to a moderate-density residential community that has conveniences and some light industrial areas.” Charleston is only 28 miles southwest of the town. Its proximity to Mt. Pleasant allows its residents to be within minutes of most of their major needs.
