10 Things You Might Not Know About Summerville

Summerville is the Flowertown in the Pines, a nickname its Chamber of Commerce placed on it almost a century ago. Today, the city is exploding in virtually every way. The small towns that surround the city are also experiencing remarkably increased interest.

1. More than 18 square miles, Summerville finds itself in three counties: Dorchester, Berkeley, and Charleston.

2. As much grown as the city is currently experiencing, its boom began between 1980 and 1990, when it more than tripled in population in a single decade. It has more than doubled again since then!

3. The event for which it is most known, the Flowertown Festival, a yearly arts and crafts festival held in April, is the largest festival of its kind in the entire state.

4. Summerville lays claim to being the "Birthplace of Sweet Tea." To solidify that status, the town brewed and mixed over 144,000 gallons in one day in 2015, a world record.

5. Summerville's storied history includes the passing of the country's first tree protection ordinance almost immediately upon its becoming an official town in 1847.

6. Speaking of history, Middleton Place and the Summerville Historic District are among the city's five high-profile locations on the National Register of Historic Places.

7. Summerville is now the 7th most populated city in the state, directly behind Greenville. It has approximately two-thirds the number of residents Mt. Pleasant currently has.

8. Summerville is blessed with Azalea Park, a 12-acre paradise in the midst of its downtown. The park boasts peaceful ponds, paths, fountains, tennis courts and an inviting collection of permanent sculpture.

9. Long known for its Dorchester 2 public schools, Summerville is also home to Pinewood Prep, a highly regarded independent school that accepts students from preschool through grade 12.

10. Summerville has welcomed national, regional and locally-owned retail, restaurant, and service businesses at record rates over the last decade. The same is true for homebuilders and developers.
