Friends of the Hunley
The H.L. Hunley was the world's very first successful combat submarine. This 39 ft 5 inch vessel housed an eight man crew, and it embarked on its first and last mission on the night of Feb 17, 1864. It's mission was to sink the USS HOUSATONIC and it did so by ramming its torpedo into the hull of the enemy ship. However, the Hunley never returned from her successful mission. She vanished into the depths of the ocean without a trace, and she took her crew with her. This famous submarine was discovered once again on May 3, 1995 and was recovered from its watery grave on August 8, 2000. Since then a nonprofit organization called Friends of the Hunley has been working to raise funds in order to promote the recovery, conservation and exhibition of the H.L. Hunley. This historic vessel is now housed in the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, and tours of the facility and lab are available on Saturdays and Sundays. At this time, the Hunley is undergoing archaeological study and conservation treatment in hopes of solving one of the greatest mysteries of all time.
