Amidst all of the talk about how important it is to exercise
and eat healthily, sometimes you just
want to indulge and eat some delicious fried chicken wings smothered in blue
cheese dressing and accompanied by a cold beer. If you're in the mood for
something fried (and not-so-healthy), here are our top four spots in the area
that you can take care of your wing craving.
1. The Kickin' Chicken (Summerville, Downtown Charleston, James
Island, West Ashley, and Mount Pleasant)
As the name of this local chain implies, this place is all
about chicken—so of course their wings are noteworthy. They feature more than twenty-four flavors that you can choose from, and their blue
cheese dressing is creamy, tasty, and strewn with big ol' chunks of the good
stuff: actual blue cheese. Our favorite concoction? A dozen pterodactyl (a
delectable combo of teriyaki and barbecue sauces) wings, fried up to be extra
crispy. And don't forget to get a bucket of your favorite beer with which to wash
down those flappers.
2. Boone's Bar (345
King Street, Downtown Charleston)
Boone's is fairly new to the Lowcountry, having opened in
the fall of 2010, but it's already made a name for itself when it comes to
food, atmosphere, and great drink specials. Boone's features three bars, an
outdoor patio, and an open kitchen stacked up in a multi-story space that is
full of character. And their menu ain't half bad either. On Wednesday nights,
swing by Boone's to enjoy half-price wings (so you can save money while
chomping on something tasty). And don't forget to ask about their various craft
brews so that you can fancy up your drink choice while enjoying some wings.
3. The Roost Bar 'n' Grill (825 Savannah Highway, West Ashley)
West Ashley's Avondale area has become a happening
place over the past couple of years, and that's partly thanks to The Roost. The
sports bar isn't just about watching the game on one of the many television
sets (although that's a nice perk)—it's also about some great eats and awesome
specials. Like the wings, for example. From 4 until 7 every Wednesday and
Friday evening, you can get ten of The Roost's fabulous wings for only $6 while
you enjoy libations and the great crowd. Want to try a unique wing flavor
that'll knock your socks off? Ask for buffalo parm.
4. Moe's Tavern (714
Rutledge Avenue, on the Crosstown & 5
Cumberland Street, Downtown Charleston)
Moe's began as Moe's Crosstown Tavern located on Rutledge,
and it quickly became a favorite of local residents. Now it has a second
location in the downtown area that boasts an astounding eleven 50-inch HD
plasma TVs for all you sports nuts to enjoy…while you eat your wings, of
course. Moe's offers customers a choice of ten different flavors to suit any
palate. You think you have what it takes to beat the hottest of them all?
Request that your wings be flavored with Moe Hotter sauce—and be sure to have a
friend take video of you trying to eat the devilishly hot creation.
These are our top four places to go to get flappers—did we
cover all of your favorites, or did we leave one or two out?
