Eat-A-Pita Charleston SC
Charleston is well known for its cuisine, particularly seafood and old-fashioned Southern home cooking. While these styles of food are good, they are not all that Charleston has to offer: far from it. Tucked less than a block south of Marion Square is Eat-A-Pita, a Mediterranean street food hotspot.
One of the best items at Eat-A-Pita is the classic gyro. For a little more than $8, the customer can watch the cook ready a homemade pita with fresh vegetables (onions, tomatoes, and lettuce), tzatziki sauce, and hot lamb meat right from the spit. This deal comes with a fountain drink and a bag of chips as well. The gyro is wrapped in a sort of wax paper to keep it together, but it is so large that sometimes a fork is more advisable. The falafel is also particularly impressive.
Other than Mediterranean food, Eat-A-Pita has vegetarian and more 'American' options. They offer salads, cookies, 8 ounce hamburgers, beef tips, grilled shrimp, and more. While these food choices are doubtlessly as good as the Greek options, why go to a restaurant with pita in the name and not eat one? If visiting a Mediterranean restaurant, it only makes sense to eat the food, too.
One downside of Eat-A-Pita has nothing to do with the food and everything to do with the location. The building itself is convenient, particularly to the College of Charleston campus and several area hotels. That said, it only has half of a building, which leaves a long, thin room with a floor that's uneven in spots. From the street, it may look like just another hole-in-the-wall joint with subpar food. But don't let the smallness fool you: everything is clean, it is just cosy, too. Another downside is the speed of service. On many visits there will be one person as both cashier and cook. It is therefore understandable if he is slow, having to perform both jobs, but it would not hurt to have another person on the shift to speed up the deliciousness a bit.
The downtown location is not the only one. There is also an Eat-A-Pita location in West Ashley off Savannah Highway, and a booth at the Coliseum for any hockey-watching gyro cravings. Eat-A-Pita caters hors d'oeuvre trays and delivers (for a small fee) on the Peninsula. With all of these options, there is no reason to not give them a visit!
