Recognized as one of America's premier performing arts festivals, the Spoleto Festival is happening right now in Charleston, South Carolina! Beginning on May 25th and ending on June 10th, these 17 days are jam packed with performances from renowned artists as well as emerging performers. Over 120 artists are gracing the stages of various theaters, churches and outdoor spaces throughout Charleston, and now is the time to seize the opportunity to attend this famous festival!

An eclectic mix of performances can be found amid this festival including everything from opera and dance performances to symphonic, coral and jazz music performances. Yet given all that this festival has to offer, the historic and quaint atmosphere of Charleston truly completes the experience. This host city provides for an overall stage like none other, allowing for people from all around the world to nestle into its comfortable atmosphere.

The festival prides itself on its acceptance of all different types of performing arts, and its unique atmosphere allows for veterans to mingle with newcomers and young performers. The original goal of the festival was actually to create an American counterpart to the annual Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Hence the name!

The kick-off to the festival was held on Friday, May 25, 2012 on the porch of Charleston City Hall. Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. started the ceremonies off with a shower of confetti, and he was joined by Mayor Daniel Benedetti of Spoleto, Italy. The two majors shared a sentimental moment together, where both acknowledged the sister cities and their wonderful traditions, and thus the 17 days began!

The Spoleto Festival is celebrating its 36th season, and there are only a handful of days left to participate in the festivities. Tickets can be purchased at the Spoleto Festival USA box office, which is located in the lobby of the Gaillard Auditorium, 77 Calhoun Street. Tickets can also be bought by phone at 843.579.3100 or online by clicking here.
