Spring is here. The birds are chirping (and possibly waking you up before your alarm clock goes off), the trees are green (and dropping pollen on your car), and the weather is absolutely gorgeous. All of this means one major thing: It’s time to head outside! Check out our top five hang-out spots for spring here in the Holy City.
1. Red’s Ice House, Mt. Pleasant (98 Church Street)
We can’t very well have a top five list of places to hang during the springtime without including the famous Red’s Ice House on Shem Creek. Red’s is renowned throughout the Lowcountry for its killer outdoor atmosphere, live music, and ice cold beer. And if you’re not a beer lover, don’t worry—there are plenty of other libations for you to enjoy. Furthermore, Red’s has a fairly impressive menu full of seafood favorites (we recommend the Saku Tuna Treat). Red’s is the perfect place to hang out with good friends, the whole family, or that special someone and watch the sun set over the water.
2. D.D. Pecker’s Wing Shack, West Ashley (1660 Savannah Highway)
It’s a dive bar, it’s a wing restaurant, and it’s a great place to chill on the patio and soak up the rays. Pecker’s has live music on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, along with daily lunch specials and awesome promos and events throughout the year. The Shack’s owners, Derek and Brian, are always ready to offer their customers a wave and a chat in order to make them feel at home. Heading to Pecker’s and feeling brave? Opt to spin the Mystery Shot Wheel and see what kind of delicious (or not-so-delicious) shot you end up with.
3. “The Joe” Riverdogs Stadium (360 Fishburne Street)
The Joseph Riley Stadium is home to Charleston’s minor league baseball team, the Riverdogs—and the perfect place to bring the whole crew (whether that crew includes adults or kiddies) for some great afternoon and evening fun. The Joe has events happening throughout the spring such as Thirsty Thursdays, Bark for Brew, Family Sundays, Red-Shirt Fridays, and more. Show your support for the Holy City’s own Riverdogs and have a blast while you’re doing it at the Joe.
4. Shem Creek Bar and Grill, Mt. Pleasant (508 Mill Street)
We’re headed back to Shem Creek for our number four favorite place to hang out during the springtime. Shem Creek Bar and Grill is another restaurant that has a beautiful patio where patrons can sit and enjoy a few delicious cocktails—or where the whole family can dig in to some yummy grub. If you’re an adult, burning up in the warm weather, and looking for a way to cut loose, try one of the Bar and Grill’s adult milkshakes, which combine all-around old-fashioned fun with a little bit of adult flavor. The Oreo adult milkshake is our favorite.
5. Salty Mike’s Deck Bar (17 Lockwood Drive)
You can’t pass up a place that has “deck” in its name, particularly when the weather is as beautiful as it is in Charleston during the spring. Located just below the Marina Variety Store Restaurant, Salty’s is the place to go if you want a great view of the water and some cold adult beverages. The menu’s limited, so you may want to head upstairs for dinner, but be prepared for live music, karaoke, or other fun happenings when you head to the Deck Bar.
These are our top five favorite places to chill when the weather gets warm—what would you add to the list?
