MUSC is "a public institution of higher learning the purpose of which is to preserve and optimize human life in South Carolina and beyond." The university has grown from a small, private college to a university with six different colleges ranging from medicine, pharmacy and nursing to dental medicine and health professions. The MUSC medical center was the first teaching hospital established in the state of South Carolina and has become renowned world wide. In 2009, US News & World Report named the Medical University of South Carolina as "One of America's Best Hospitals."
