Charleston's City Hall was built in 1801 and served as the Bank of the United States before becoming Charleston City Hall in 1818. A gallery housing an extensive collection of original portraits can be found on the second floor, and famous leaders such as George Washington and James Monroe are featured. The city council chambers on the second floor of the building are actually still in use today and continue to remain the center of city government.
